From St. James Methodist Church, 1856-1967

In 1882, Mrs. H.H. Parks, a kind and gentle soul, called a meeting of young boys and girls of the church to consider the organization of a “Juvenile Missionary Society.” This meeting was held in Mrs. Parks’ apartment in the Richmond Academy building on Telfair Street.
The result of this meeting justified the wisdom of her venture, for the growth of the society was so phenomenal that they were obliged to hold their meetings in the Sunday School rooms of the church. Mrs. Parks had a captivating way with young people and built such a place for herself in the hearts of these boys and girls that they renamed the society in her honor. It became known as “The Sarah Parks Juvenile Missionary Society”--a name that grew more precious to her as the years went by.
The society met on the third Thursday in each month and accomplished much for the glory of God.

Mrs. W.L. Sherman succeeded Mrs. Parks in 1883. Mrs. Sherman was a woman of deep piety and great mental endowment. She adhered only to the highest standard of Christian ethics and moral conduct and was so stern and exacting in her discipline that the children nicknamed her “Lady Manager”--a title she wore with pride. The Christian influence, consecrated toil, and training of the “Lady Managers” which followed resulted in many spiritual blessings in St. James Church.
